Surgery, 30 Day Challenge, FB Book Club?

Hello FB Family!

How is your February going so far? Are any of you still working through the new 30 Day Kickstart from January? Are you onto the next challenge or program, or winging it right now?

Next week I’m hoping to start up where I left off on FB Kickstart, on Day 8. I was going strong with my workout consistency and really enjoying the challenge. Then I had to have a minor surgery on my foot. Everything went as expected, but, the recovery instructions they gave me were to “not go hiking for a few days”...when in reality I ended up spending the next 4 weeks unable to walk, on crutches. It kind of set me up for disappointment, to have such a big difference between what they told me to expect and actual heal time. If I had a job where I needed to make it to the office every day, I would have been in a lot of trouble. Ugh. My foot, a month later, is still swollen, tender and bruised. I've noticed this underestimation of heal time as a trend across medical procedures, especially in the last few years. Anyone else? I blame capitalism. lol - and, but, I’m also entirely serious. Aaaanyways, I digress….

I did get out of almost a month of my half of the housework and cooking, which I’ll admit was nice (a huge thank you to Daniel for the support).

So instead of kicking off my year with a bunch of great workouts, I ended up kicking off my year with a bunch of great books.

Here’s my reading list for the last month - there were a couple more fiction books in there that were supposed to be guilty pleasure reads, but they ended up being really bad. I understand that’s entirely my subjective opinion, but I ended up feeling like I didn’t want to shout them out! So I swapped a couple of those for one that I really enjoyed that I read over fall. Here are the books I enjoyed, that kept my brain busy while my body healed:

- Doppleganger by Naomi Klein

- The Project by Courtney Summers (full disclosure; CS is a friend of mine, a really great person and writer)

- The Assassin's Apprentice, and Royal Assassin by Robin Hobb (books 1&2 of the Farseer trilogy, a recommendation from Daniel)

- The Freaks Came Out To Write by Tricia Romero

- The Eyes are the Best Part by Monika Kim

- The Heartbeat of Trees by Peter Wohlleben

Daniel and I swapped watching tv before bed for reading, and we’ve been sleeping much better since. All this reading has felt great and I know there are a bunch of big readers in the FB Family…it got me thinking. Would any of you be interested in starting a book club with me here in the FB Community? We don’t have to be reading the same book, more like we share what we’ve been reading and enjoying. I’m always looking for new good reads and whenever I find a book that moves me, I have the urge to shout it from the rooftops. Thoughts? Would any of you be interested in this?

While I was sidelined from my regular routines, I did try to keep up on my physical therapy - it’s just a forever part of my life to keep myself feeling good (these are basically the Pilates workouts that I film and share here onsite). Motivation is hard to come by when you don’t feel good! And sometimes I can be a brat and have a mentality of “I can’t do the things that I want to, so I’m doing nothing at all”. Does anyone else ever experience this thinking? There was plenty of that on my part. But I did my best and I’m hoping that next week I’ll be back to the 30 Day Challenge, though I will need to start in carefully and with some modifications after that much time off.

Despite the foot setback, I’m doing really well and taking great care of myself. I hope you’re all doing well! Tell me about your workouts and let me know if you’re down to start a book (recommendation) club! Edit to add: if you want to start now, share what you’ve been reading!

Kelli
