Why do we practice mindfulness? When I’m working with people in a therapy setting, I pitch it as long-term preventive care for our minds. However, it’s more than that. It makes mindfulness skills (nonjudgmental present-moment awareness) easier to move into when we need it. For example, when I’m driving to work and suddenly there is more traffic and people cutting each other off and it peaks my anxiety. At that moment, I need to be able to recognize my internal state and move into mindfulness fairly quickly so I don’t say something my toddler shouldn’t hear.
I therefore think that our mindfulness practice can also mirror the needs of everyday life — that is the inspiration for today’s practice. In this practice, we will start by getting into the mindfulness headspace and then practice intervals of intense focus interspersed with periods of more relaxed focus. We will alternate between these for about 10 minutes total.
When I practice mindfulness like this, it feels SO good. I feel like I am more capable of focusing and it actually helps me to see how to “prepare” myself for moments of intense focus. I would love to hear what you all think of this style?!
