My dorm boasts a roof deck residents can freely use with a great view of the campus and downtown Boston. In summer there are weekly yoga classes on the roof, which I've never missed since last year. Frankly speaking I wasn't into yoga last year and only attended them because I was the president of the dorm, but these days yoga is really growing on me. And being on the rooftop really elevates the whole experience.
My favorite thing is that nothing is between me and the sky. When lying down for Shavasana the only things in my sight are clouds and the sky and nothing else. It feels as if the sky is embracing me, and ironically I feel more grounded than ever. A rare occasion in my day to truly focus on the present moment with the clear head.
I'm glad I finally started enjoying yoga. For the longest time I didn't love yoga because there were too many basic poses I couldn't do properly with my stiff body. I mean, you can't have fun with yoga if you hate downward dog lol. It was only a year ago that I finally managed to do downward dog with straight legs and made friends with it, after gaining some flexibility and strength with FB workouts.
Funny I am much better at yoga now than in my early 20s when I took yoga classes regularly. Another reminder of the benefit of blending various training styles-- I never knew that mobility requires muscular strength. Yoga also complements other training styles by providing unique elements such as flowing without break, compound total body movement, balance work etc. It's a whole different challenge! I'm really happy that we now have Marina at FB. Her power yoga routines are super fun, so check them out if you haven't yet!
