Many thanks to all you weirdos who sang this along with me. 😅 You who didn't, please join us - the melody is from „if you're happy and you know it, clap your hands...“ (Cro. „kad si sretan, lupi dlanom ti o dlan“)...
So, not even a full month in 2020, and I had to OVERTHINK everything. 🙄 Have you ever reached a point where you thought to yourself: “Oh, where did my years go?” I thought I would be less that, and more of that- take a pick: fitter, richer, happier, healthier, sexier, non-stressed, established, successful, stronger, traveled, confident, secure, etc...
It’s something we all think - every year - at several occasions, two biggest being our birthdays and New year. Yet we're not stopping, we still think it. And very often we overthink it too. 🤨
Although I have much to celebrate (wedding, new apartment, starting FB again, etc), I for one never thought I would be over 30, constantly tired, overweight, sarcastic overthinker, looking forward to being unemployed, and starting down a new career path. And I still cannot believe I'm putting all this in writing!😳 So how can I be so flippin' excited after all? Because I’ve realized a few things in the last year. I found gems of knowledge that have been life-altering - imagine storms giving double rainbows. Maybe you know it already, but here they go anyway.
1. I'll start with the Visualisation Board. A year ago I was in a really bad place, my UNHAPPINESS started to show. My husband said something to me which shook me up and stayed with me. He said that I'm not as happy as before and that I seem more like a shadow of that person. Mind you, my happiness is his priority, so he already took steps to help me – one of many was his support in me quitting a job. I'm also a pretty private person, so we putt an extra effort into finding a place of our own – we bought an apartment. That and many more steps/goals were on my Board, and that helped me the most. I can make an extra post about this Board, if anyone is interested, maybe this will help you as well. 😊
2. Next was the Stop Doing List. We all make lists, whether literally or figuratively. Maybe it’s a weekly to-do list, shopping list, work-related one or list of your dreams. But how often do we make a list of the things we should stop doing? 🤔 Only the last year, I’ve realized that a stop-doing list might be just as important for me, if not more. What do I want to stop doing or using or saying, thinking? What words, tags, habits, behaviors? Where do I wanna stop going? For me, top on that list was to stop working in a job that was burning me out. My health went sideways, backward and upside down because of that job (a story for another time). Furthermore, I needed to stop interacting with chronic complainers and those negative glass-half-empty people, and envious people as well. Also, I decided to stop using self-limiting phrases, like „I’m the type of person who…” or „I’m nowhere near as…”, „I'm used to...“, etc. Those phrases were TAGS that I attached to my life, and to me as a person. But they had to go! So, they went to the stop-doing list. There were even more points on the list, of course. Once completed, I observed that stop-doing items seemed to impact my life in profound ways. Something I wasn't ready to accept, not anymore. This also created the space I needed to start checking off more of the other list. And wouldn’t you know it, my start-doing list just got way more exciting! And achievable! 👍
3. All the things you think you can't do, you can – YOU REALLY CAN. 🙂 When I told people that I plan to quit work with (at that point) no backup plan, I got various responses. “That's so exciting! Or amazing! Or that I'm crazy! Or they would love to do something like that, but just can’t because….” And while those reasons might be valid (e.g. husband, kids, finances, scared, job, etc.), I’ve learned that there’s always a way. It’s just a matter of choice. And you have to choose doing that is more important than not doing it. Once you do, you’ll figure it out.
I believe many of us had come to a fitness journey this way. That old saying “you can do anything you put your mind to,” though cheesy, is true. But firstly, you must choose that you want it. And by that, I mean openly declare it, share it, believe in it and scream it from the mountain tops. Once you do that, you 100% can do it. And step-by-step, day-by-day it will come together. 🙂
4. You really should try to find the GOOD in everything. While for some this comes naturally, for some it takes some extra mental training. Many of life’s curveballs are out of our control. Once you accept that and learn to let go, to find the good in everything, to make the best of everything- you’ll be far less stressed. And I promise you will start to see more of those DOUBLE RAINBOWS.🙂
P.S. I'm finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. 😅 As you know I decided to leave my job, and gave in my notice. My final day is January 31st. And yes – they are making me working up until the very last minute of the last day, with a horrible schedule to boot.😳 But looking on the bright side of life, I'll soon be gone from this toxic environment. Silverlining must be that I learned how to love and respect myself for myself. 😊
