Researchers use this type of breath counting as a way to measure people’s levels of mindfulness. Essentially, if you are able to get through a substantial portion of the breath counting portion without your mind wandering or going down a mental rabbit hole, then your mindfulness abilities are well-honed.

Now, I don’t want you to start judging yourself on whether you are “good” or “bad” at mindfulness — that kind of is against the point. Rather, using it as a way to both improve and keep tabs on how mindful you are is helpful.
