Progress can be a tiny step

I have a project at my climbing gym. Sunday (picture top left) I was afraid to go for the next hold. Today I made it to that hold, didn't dare put my foot up. Next attempt I tried turning more and got my foot up higher. Last attempt I got my foot up, but in a wrong position so I could not push of anymore. Each attempt went better than the last though, so I was happy.

Do you apply the 1% rule (1% better each time)? If so: how and when?
