Yoga Basics of Balancing: Foundational Flow for Balance and Alignment

Balancing is a practice of fine tuning movements and making shifts so that you don’t fall off your game… or flat on your face. Learning how to shift your body in subtle ways to cement your stature or even how to fall with better use of your body, is the goal. Balance is something that we have to keep seeking & creating. While doing this, it is extremely helpful to build body awareness, and increase range of motion. In this video we get started by touching the surface of Muscular Energy and optimal joint position, (more on this later when we dive into the The Universal Principles of Alignment) and it’s a great introduction to what small adjustments are available in the body! 

Challenge yourself to isolate a new or different muscle in each shape and notice how it feels. How does your shape change or strengthen? Where could you use more improvement? 

Use these five steps to help build that awareness and have fun with this one. Remember, we are building from the ground up. 

  • Set the Foundation: Bring awareness to physical alignment 
  • Muscular Energy: Create stability in the joints
  • Inner Spiral: Refine alignment by positioning the bones 
  • Outer Spiral: Position the bones to balance the aligning actions of the Inner Spiral
  • Organic Energy: Stretch and expand in the shape
