This article tackles the role of exercise in the treatment of addictions and the recovery process. While certainly not a cure, there is growing evidence that exercise can play an important role in addiction recovery. One of my favorite findings is that folks with addictions who engage in physical activity interventions as part of their treatment often leave feeling empowered and have greater self-efficacy which, in my opinion, is absolutely crucial for everyone but especially those who have struggled with addiction.
I share this article with you because we all have people in our lives who do, have, or will struggle with addictions. While I certainly don’t advocate that you tell these loved ones what to do in their treatment, I think it can be helpful to know how to best support folks with addictions in their recovery process. Physical activity might be one way you can simultaneously connect with them and promote their recovery.
