Hope everyone is doing well and having a good summer (or winter if you’re in the Southern Hemisphere).
I’m writing to seek you point of view on posts in comments on workouts that say the workout in question is too easy. What do you think of these types of posts? I personally find them demotivating. It’s like being back at university and walking out of the hardest exam you’ve ever written and having someone skip up to tell you they aced it, it was so easy,
I’ll start by saying I have no problem whatsoever with the qualifier ‘easy’ for a move or workout. I am fine with the trainers telling me a workout or move is easy or easier as it is a good indicator as to whether it might be the right one for me. I am also fine with community comments indicating that a workout is a good rest day or lighter option. However, I get frustrated when I go into the comments section of a workout - I like to read the comments as many people offer great tips on how they’ve modified the workout up or down, workout pairings, etc - and see comments from people saying the workout was too easy for them. Who are these comments meant for? If a workout isn’t hard enough for you, there are many options: 1) modify to make harder by adding weights, bands, cardio 2) find a harder workout, FB has 100s! 3) Make a note in the comments block of your calendar that the workout was too easy or if you have FB Plus, on your dashboard or workout tags.
In most instances, I am fine with the fact that I am at a level where I do easier workouts and mods. But there are days when I am struggling to do anything and I read these types of comments on workouts and wonder why I am even bothering. But that is me against my ego and I remind myself that I am only competing with myself. As Kelli says, do what your body can safely do, it isn’t about your ego. So if a workout isn’t hard enough for you, please modify it to suit your needs and tell us how you did it instead of saying it’s too easy!
Apologies for the venting, I just happen to have come across a lot of the ‘too easy’ comments and am feeling a bit frustrated.
Update: Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and comments, lots of great points. I especially appreciate the point to not take the ‘too easy’ comments too personally. When I reread my post, I noted my use of the word ‘fine’ a couple of times which I tend to use when I’m feeling a bit defensive and out of joint. Will check my ego and keep moving my own way!
What do you think?
