Different ways to hold dumbells

I actually have a question: most of the time Daniel/ Kelly hold their weights on their shoulder while doing lunges, squats.

For me it feels really uncomfortable, as well holding the weight in the front when doing goblet squats - can I hold the dumbells in both hands and let them "hang" during squats, lunges, goblet squats or doors or chance the focus?
