Barbell workouts

I just wanted to ask anybody here that works out using a barbell if you include the weight of the bar in the overall amount you’re lifting?

For example when I deadlift 40kg - 33kg comes from actual weight plates , the remaining 7kg is the weight of the bar .

I’ve just had someone tell me that’s wrong and I shouldn’t be taking the bar weight into account, all 40kg should be coming from the weight plates.

Please tell me I haven’t been working it out wrong all this time! haha
