The Dish

Shakshuka is a classic North African and Middle Eastern dish consisting of eggs poached in a savory tomato sauce filled with peppers, onions, and garlic. For our shakshuka breakfast pizza, we top whole wheat naan with tomato sauce and veggies. Instead of a poached egg, we bake the egg directly on top of the pizza, seasoning the entire flatbread with cumin and paprika before it goes in the oven. A lovely sprinkling of fresh chopped cilantro adds the finishing touch.

Hacking this Recipe

One whole egg equals 2oz or roughly 50g, averaging about 1 egg per person for this recipe. For the whole wheat naan, our grocery store option weighed in at 4oz (100g) per flatbread, serving one naan per person. For smaller whole wheat pitas, adjust the toppings as necessary depending on their weight and size.

Vegan Modifications

Feel free to substitute the egg in this recipe for your favorite vegan meat alternative. We love this breakfast pizza with a little scrambled tofu or vegan breakfast sausage (or both!).
